y wife and I planned a quiet getaway from the city and David from Hanoi Eco Tours promised that the three day homestay and farm to farm tour of Mai Chau would fit the bill. David picked us up at our hotel at exactly eight on a warm Monday and we were off. We were in Mai Chau around mid-day. We hit the ground running with a leisurely cycling tour around the villages right after a sumptuous lunch with a native family.
We witnessed the lifestyle of the White Thai Ethnic people in the surrounding villages. A stop at the Thai Museum was enlightening on the ethnic cultures as David seemed to have every fact at his fingertips. Back in the village we experienced firsthand the preparation of traditional Vietnamese cuisine as we helped the host family prepare the evening meal. We enjoyed some “ruou can” – traditional brew- before retiring to bed in a huge communal room in one of the magnificent Mai Chau Stilt houses.
We woke to “work” on the following morning, learning the farming process in the rich Mai Chau farms. We experienced land preparation, fertilization and vegetable planting and learnt their use in Vietnamese cuisine. The most exciting time was the fishing session near the family home where we caught fish for the evening meal. Our host even allowed us to herd the water buffalo to a new grazing place.
The final day entailed a walk to the local market, shopping for souvenirs and learning more about the people. We then went climbing the 1000 StepCave, a breathtaking location with a scenic view of the whole area from its entrance. Afterwards, we had one final meal with our new found family and boarded the bus back to our hotel. I couldn’t have had a better holiday.
