About Cat Ba
Cat Ba is known as the 3rd largest island in Vietnam, covering. 336 square kilometres, south of Halong Bay, with the nickname “The Pearl Island”.
Cat Ba has been a UNESCO site since 2014, but it is far less crowded than Halong Bay. Located in the Northeast of Vietnam, 30 kilometres from the city of Hai Phong and a 3.5-hour drive,then a ferry crossing from Hanoi to get to Cai Ba.

About Cat Ba Speed boat Terminals
There is only two speed boat terminal on Cat Ba Island to transfer tourists. All the speedboats are well-equipped with life jackets, fire alarms, Fire extinguishers, and first aid kits to meet the safety requirements of tourist standards.
Cai Vieng Pier

- Busy hours: 8:00 – 9:00 am and 2 pm – 4 pm, during the weekend from Friday to Sunday – Super busy during the summer time from May to the middle of August.
Located about 22 kilometres (13.6 miles) from the town of Cat Ba, the Cai Vieng ferry (The main ferry crossing route from Hai Phong to Cat Ba), the pier serves hundreds of tourists daily from Got Pier, Hai Phong. It only takes half an hour from the city of Hai Phong via Tan Vu – Lach Huyen highway and bridge to Got pier, then another 8 -8-minute speed boat ride to get to Cai Vieng Speed boat terminal.

Located about 22 kilometres (13.6 miles) from the town of Cat Ba. Gia Luan pier (the main ferry crossing route from Tuan Chau (Halong) to Cat Ba) serves very few tourists daily from Tuan Chau harbour, Halong. During the peak season, if you are travelling by car and cross the ferry, it takes a few hours from May to the middle of August. It is only a 15-minute drive from Bai Chay or a 25-minute drive from Halong city, then another 15-minute speedboat ride to the Gia Luan Speed Boat Terminal (Cat Ba).

Paradise Express is the company that runs the 5-star speed boat from Tuan Chau to Cat Ba. There are 2 boats with a capacity of 198 seats and 300 seats. (They no longer operate the speedboat – Recent update)
Tips for taking a speedboat from Halong to Cat Ba
- If you are seasick, take the pill half an hour before departure
- Present at the ticket booth 40 minutes or at least 30 minutes before departure.
- Buy the ticket online during the peak season, from May to the middle of August, to avoid selling out.
- If you miss the speedboat, take the ferry instead, or hire a private charter speedboat from Nam Tung, about 200k VND per person.
- There is a huge crowd during public holidays like the 30th of April, May Day and the 2nd of Sept. Avoid them.
